Silver identity bracelets originated as functional military gear in the early 20th century, where the plaque was engraved with each soldier’s name, blood type, and religious affiliation during World War I and II
They saw a resurgence in the 1970s for POW/MIA recognition and evolved further in to contemporary silver accessories 

This sterling silver example was assayed in London in 1976 with a maker’s mark of ‘FA’
As well as bold hallmarks to the underside of the plaque, the faceted curb links are stamped ‘925’ at either end 
Fastened securely via a spring ring clasp
