A sensational 1974 Sterling Silver piece by esteemed jeweller Roy King, winner of two first prizes, a second and a third at the British Modern Jewellery Exhibition in 1961. The winning pieces are now in the permanent collection of Goldsmith’s Hall
Alongside the renowned Anglo-Italian jeweller Andrew Grima, King was a pioneer of the ‘Bark Effect’, a desirable finish that lead to the acquisition of his pieces by celebrities such as Tom Jones and George Harrison, with Pattie Boyd (Harrison’s then wife) wearing one of King’s wedding bands to their ceremony
The clean white elongated dial is decorated with black heavy diamond hands and black italicized Roman numerals
The Sterling silver monocoque case, reminiscent of the Cartier Tank Allongée (Cartier being a brand for which King was once an unaccredited manufacturer) features a polished stepped bezel and brushed case back bearing the marque’s iconic statement hallmarks (assayed in London in 1974) as well as skilfully hand engraved initials of the lucky person to whom this watch was gifted on the 29th of December 1976
Setting this piece aside from the rest is the lugged, Sterling silver Milanese mesh bracelet, a contemporary twist on an otherwise classic dress watch. Fastened by King’s legendary multi setting buckle clasp and bearing bold hallmarks for London 1974
